Recently, all prefer small dogs, which are easy to carry on your hand or in your purse, can be accustomed to the cat tray and feeding takes a minimum of time and money. However, there are those who believe that the dog should be big. Trying to find out which breeds of dogs are the largest, we formed a small rating, which is based on the height at the withers and the average weight of the dogs.
9. Deerhound
A deerhound or Scottish greyhound deer is a thin dog weighing about 45 kilograms with a height of 75 centimeters, making the dog considered a giant in its world. The main advantage of this breed in its speed, because trained dogs can catch up with a deer, so that during the hunt you can use such a dog instead of a weapon.
8. Leonberger
The name of the breed comes from the consonant city of Leonberg, which is located in Germany. The symbol of the city that was on the coat of arms is the lion, and the breed of dog that appeared later is the symbol of the city. Leonberg is a mixture of the Pyrenean Shepherd, Newfoundland and St. Bernard. Thanks to crossbreeding, a proud and huge handsome man turned out, which is popular and is considered an example of a family dog. Leonberger has a very gentle and calm nature, he is sociable and benevolent, thanks to which children will love him with all his soul.
7. Newfoundland
The name of the breed comes from the Canadian province bordering the waters of the Atlantic. The dog has an aristocratic and good-natured character, feels great in the water and swims quickly. For example, on their home island they were used to carry heavy objects, to draw a net full of fish. Since the dog has a quiet and docile nature, it is often used as a nanny for children. Newfoundland always took with them on fishing, because even during the fog he could determine which side the shore was located. The average height is 66-71 centimeters, weight is about 60 kilograms. The largest known representative of this breed had a length of 182 centimeters (from nose to tail), with a weight of 117 kg.
6. Tibetan Mastiff
As for the mastiffs, there are several types of them, and all of them are large enough, therefore they are worthy to get into this top. In general, the Tibetan Mastiff is the most mysterious, rare, expensive and ancient breed of dogs in the world. The first historical records of them appeared in the 4th century BC. Their character is docile, but at the same time they are strong and enduring, they are highly valued for their hunting skills. Weight - 70-80 kilograms, height - 75-78 centimeters (males).
5. Irish Wolfhound
Irish Wolfhound is a very tall dog with a great and long history. The ancestors of these dogs were used by the Celts themselves, going hunting with them. The dog has outstanding size, amazing speed and power, thanks to which they could easily catch and neutralize any prey. Because of this, the number of the breed also declined steadily, until at one moment it reached a critical point. In the end, at the beginning of the 19th century, the Irish Wolfhound practically ceased to exist. The enthusiast Richardson, who traveled to all the islands of Great Britain in order to find the female of this breed and restore the number of these tall curly and muscular beauties, decided to save the breed.
4. Pyrenean Mastiff
The first mentions of this breed appeared as early as a thousand years BC, however, they officially recognized the Pyrenean mastiff only in 1946. Experts are confident that the Phoenicians brought this breed so that the dog was a reliable guard and shepherd. The height of males reaches 80 centimeters at the withers, while the weight of the male is about 70-75 kilograms. Previously, the owners of these huge dogs called them "gentle giants." The fact is that this dog is very patient and easily attached to its owners, able to protect children from strangers. I think that hardly anyone will want to approach the child when there is a fighting giant beside him, scaring him with barking and huge teeth.
3. St. Bernard
Another cute giant who is considered a very kind, brave and strong dog. The height of the males at the withers reaches 0.9 meters. The history of this breed is quite interesting, because in fact the St. Bernard is the result of many years of crossings of the Tibetan mastiff with European dog breeds. In the end, it turned out a true friend, with whom any travel is not terrible. They have a very thick coat, so that they are not afraid of cold and wind, a wonderful scent, due to which they can save people from any troubles. St. Bernard is easy to learn and very accommodating. The story of Barry - St. Bernard, who found the child in the snow, warmed him with his tongue and brought him to the monastery to the monks, will be graphic.
2. Great Dane
Great Danes are giants of the dog world, in whose standards the upper limit of growth does not indicate: females are not lower than 72 centimeters, males are not lower than 82. That is, nobody knows how big such a dog can grow. By the way, the tallest dog in the world just belongs to this breed (George - 111 kg, 110 centimeters at the withers and 213 on his hind legs).A dog is a powerful, noble and graceful dog that has an innate delicacy, thereby becoming an indispensable friend and companion for active and responsible people. It is worth noting that the history of the English Mastiff and the Great Dane is rather strongly intertwined, therefore, it is certain that most of them are still not working anymore.
1. English Mastiff
And yet it was he who came first, the English Mastiff. The representatives of the ancient English breed following standards: weight - 100-110 kg, height - 90 centimeters at the withers. The largest representative of this breed, Hercules, had the following parameters: weight - 155 kg, height - 94 cm. Despite its greatness and impressive dimensions, dogs are very good-natured and friendly, therefore they will become irreplaceable comrades during their travels.
As you can see, most of the huge dogs are terrible only in appearance, because in fact they are all very friendly, and some of them can be real nannies for children and their four-legged guards, protectors. Love dogs, because a dog is a man's friend!
