Tbilisi itself, according to legend, was built around these warm sulfur springs. And its name comes from the word "tbili", which translates as "warm."
Anchiskhati
This is one of the most ancient buildings in the city. In Russian, the construction is called the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It appeared in the 6th century after the city of Tbilisi became the capital. The structure is made in the style of basil, which was popular in those days. The temple itself is very simple in architectural elements and decoration. For 1500 years, it is well preserved.
Narikala Fortress
"Narikala" literally translates as "impregnable." This fortress is also called the heart and soul of Tbilisi. This is one of the most famous and ancient monuments of antiquity. The fortress is located on the top of Mount Mtatsminda. In addition to the structure itself, tourists can admire a scenic view from here. Historians attribute the appearance of this building to the 4th century. In the 19th century, the lower bastions were demolished. The earthquake of 1827, when the remains of the fortress were destroyed, became fatal for the building. Since then it was not possible to restore it.
Metekhi
On the territory of Georgia, the Metekhi district is one of the oldest places of settlement of people. It is located on a cliff on the banks of the Kura River. Here is the residence of the Georgian kings - Metekhsky Castle. From the name of this citadel is the name of the area. If you translate the name literally, you get "Castle Neighborhood". The Metekhi temple of the Mother of God is also located here. The temple was built in the 12th century in the heart of old Tbilisi. It was destroyed and rebuilt many times. The last version was erected in the 17th century, it reached us in its current form. There are legends that this temple was chosen by Queen Tamara for her prayers.
Freedom Square
The famous avenue in Tbilisi Rustaveli ends with Freedom Square. All significant political battles take place here and the small size of this place is not a hindrance.
